In the book of Exodus, just as Israel departed the shores of Egypt, God revealed Himself to His covenant people in one aspect of His redemptive acts. He revealed Himself as the Lord their Healer.
Exodus 15.26 says
And said ‘’if you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you’’
God revealed Himself to His people as their Healer. That can also be translated as ‘’The Lord their Physician’’ God was saying to His people ”I am your Physician in this covenant relationship”
Then He gives His prescription for the complete healing and health of His people.
PROVERBS 4.20-23
My son, give attention to my words,
Incline your ear to my sayings
Do not let them from your eyes,
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
For they are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh
Proverbs 4.22 says ‘’for they (i.e. God’s word) are healing to all their flesh’’
Here we have the Great Physician’s prescription for the complete healing of His people.
Now do not look at that and say ”well that is referring to God’s people under the old covenant, and it does not apply to us now”
It does apply to us in the New Covenant because in Ephesians 2.11-14, it says:
Therefore remember that you once, Gentiles in the flesh- who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands- that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now you in Christ Jesus you who were once afar off have been brought near by the blood of Christ’’
The scripture says that in Christ Jesus we have been made nigh. In other words, we have been brought into the provisions which Israel enjoyed as God’s people under the old covenant.
God is to us the Great Physician in Christ Jesus as He was to Israel under the old covenant.
This prescription is as much for us today as it was for God’s people under the Old Covenant. It is a prescription for the healing of all our flesh.
‘All your flesh’ speaks of all the organs and tissues of your body. That is your brain, your bones, you heart and muscles and every other part of your body.
Now if it speaks of healing for all your flesh then it is speaking of healing for all manner of sicknesses and all manner of disease.
Sicknesses and diseases are different because they afflict different aspects of our bodies. For example, hepatitis is a disease condition affecting the liver and the appendicitis is a disease condition of the appendix. Then you have disease conditions affecting the blood vessels. Therefore, when God in the bible says ‘’ His word is healing for all your flesh, that is another way of saying that His word can heal you of every kind of sickness and disease condition.
You see, with medical science there are incurable conditions because of the limitation of knowledge. Medical science still does not know everything about the human body, and it does not know everything about every sick and disease. Hence there are conditions that medical science says are incurable.
For God however, there is no limitation of knowledge. God is all knowing and all powerful and there are no incurable conditions with God.
He has made His healing power available to all mankind through His word.
Psalm 107.20 says,
He sent His word and healed them and delivered them from their destruction.
He sent His word and when His word came to them, they were healed. God released His healing power in His word.
God and His word are one. if there are no incurable sicknesses and no incurable diseases with God then there are no incurable sicknesses and no incurable diseases with God’s word.
Jesus Christ is the Living word of God.
John 1.1 says
In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD was God.
What Jesus did when He walked the earth two thousand years as seen in the gospels is an indication of what His word will do in our lives today when we mix God’s word with faith.
Matthew 9.35 says
Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every sickness and disease among the people.
There was no kind of sickness and disease that could not be healed with Jesus Christ.
The American Standard Bible says ‘’He healed all manner of sickness and all manner disease among the people’’
All manner is another way of saying ‘’every kind’’. That is what the word of God means in proverbs 4.22 where it says ‘’ the word of God is healing for all your flesh’’
God’s word has within it the power to heal you from every kind of sickness and every kind of disease. This is what the word of God can do in your body today.
The Hebrew word for healing used in proverbs 4.22 can also be translated as medicine. In modern Hebrew, the word dispensary is related to this word.
Let us say you were sick and went to your doctor and then your doctor gave you a prescription for that condition. Then you proceeded to the dispensary to pick up that prescription. Once that prescription was issued, the dispenser gave you instructions on how to take that medicine so that it would have the intended effect in your body.
It would not do you any good if you went home and left it on your table and never took it according to instructions. You would continue to be sick.
In proverbs 4.20-22, we have the Great Physician’s prescription for releasing the healing power in His word for every sickness and every disease.
It says give attention to His word, incline your ears to His saying. In other words, keep paying attention to God’s word and keep hearing what He is saying to you out of His written word. Then it says keep God’s word within your heart.
To properly apply God’s prescription for your healing and health you will have to pay continual attention to what the word of God says about your healing. That means getting a hold of healing and health scriptures in the bible and paying continual attention to them and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to your heart how these scriptures apply to your situation.
Then it says incline your ear to what He has to say about your healing and health. That means to hear it with your ears continually.
Incline means to turn your ear away from everything that speaks contrary to what the word of God has to say about your healing and health.
When you take God’s prescription for your healing according to His instructions you will begin to see His healing power work through His word to effect healing in your mind and body.
